Nowadays, opinions are divided on whether surpassing human intelligence by significantly improved computers is a positive development, while a group of individuals believe it is harmful to humanity. I hold the view that growth in high-tech can cause several problems, like job displacement in many fields.
There are wide range of reasons why many people believe that the assistance of advanced computers can be highly beneficial in individuals’ lives. One significant reason is their crucial role in the medical field, where technological advancements have enabled doctors to perform surgeries remotely with remarkable precision. The development of robot-assisted and tele-surgical systems, such as the da Vinci Surgical System, enhances specialized medical care to patients in underserved areas. In 2001, a French surgical team successfully conducted the world’s first transatlantic operation, using robotic assistance over 6000 km away.
Despite these arguments, it is also considered that the development of intelligent technology can cause negative results, and I agree with this idea. Automation and artificial intelligence systems are gradually taking over some human tasks in manufacturing and industry. As an example, Tesla’s Gigafactory is known for its high degree of automation, where robots perform tasks such as painting car bodies, installing parts, and reducing the need for human labor in repetitive assembly line tasks. While production increased, many traditional jobs have been eliminated.
To conclude, although automation and robotic assistance enhance efficiency and improve quality of life and well-being, I believe the replacement of human power with advanced machines drives humanity to significant socio-economic challenges, in terms of rising unemployment and workforce displacement.
