The impact of Western cultures is permeating every aspect of our daily social life. This societal transition is resulting in the erosion of traditional customs, the homogenization of cultures, and the extinction of indigenous languages because of which I believe that this trend is overall negative development.
One major concern that comes with Westernization is the erosion of traditional customs. With many people celebrating Western holidays such as Christmas and Halloween, the importance of local rituals and practices is gradually diminishing. Central Asia can exemplify this situation as most countries there now do not celebrate local holidays like Navruz under instead gravitating towards Western celebrations. This shift is leading to the loss of cultural practices that have been passed down through generations.
Homogenization of cultural values is becoming another alarming issue worldwide. Excessive exposure to Western media and entertainment has triggered the similarization of certain cultures, showcasing Western ideals that do not align with the religious and cultural customs of other non-Western countries. For instance, Western pop music, reality TV shows, and Hollywood movies have become dominant platforms, overshadowing the importance of folk music, storytelling, and traditional festivals. Thus, embracing such alternatives may foster a sense of sameness.
Westernized lifestyles have been attributed to widespread English-learning practices, especially among young generations. Learning English as a lingua franca often comes at the expense of diminished local languages. Resultantly, many young individuals end up acquiring this language while they cannot communicate fluently in their mother tongues. Therefore, this trend can threaten oral traditions and unique ways of thinking that indigenous languages encapsulate.
In conclusion, adopting Westernized customs has adversely affected traditional values, practices, and languages. Consequently, these cultural and linguistic alterations have diluted historical values, resulting in the loss of traditional customs and local linguistic abilities. Hence, individuals should bear responsibility to preserve their cultural identities, employing a balanced approach that encourages them to perpetuate practicing their rituals and languages while embracing Western cultures moderately.
