The invention of the internet has brought a lot of changes include in our mode of communication. Some people argue that it is a good development, whereas others think it is a bad development. In my opinion, I believe that communicating through social media is advantageous, because it is convenient and faster.
Advocates of social media, support its use for communication because, it makes interaction faster and easier. With the availability of the internet, people can interact with their family members and friends who stay in different parts of the world. And this is done from the comfort of their homes without stress. Unlike in the past, it took longer time to transfer information from a messenger to a recipient. In those days, communication was done through letter writing, which also faced the risk of not getting lost. Moreover, the thoughts of how long it takes for the recipients to get their letters was also a discouraging factor, which prevented some individuals from communicating with their loved ones far away. Conversely, in this day, with the advent of smart phones and the internet, people can communicate whenever they want. Statistics have showed that, since the internet came into existence, more people travel without the fear of not being able to see or hear from their loved ones, because some of these devices are built in a way, you can make video calls, consequently reducing the loneliness that people away from home suffer.
On the other hand, some people oppose the use of socia media to communicate. They contend that communicaton through social media has devalued friendships because it comes at no cost. Some people can stay so many years without visiting their families because they believed they can always reach out to them via social media. However, in the past, people valued friendship so much, that they can take days to plan and eventually viisit their loved ones. All of these sacrifices increased bonds among people. Furthermore, nowadays, people hide behind their gadgets to express emotions which maybe false. It is difficult to tell if the love among friends is geniue or not. For example, during conversation on social media, a person reactsto a hillarious moment by using the word LOL, whereas, in the past, such moments are filled with an outburst of emotions. Nevertheless, these can still happen with the use of internet and video calls.
In conclusion, the use of social media to communicate has its advantages and disadvantages. From my perspective, I believe that its positive impacts outweigh its negative impacts, because it has made communication quicker and smarter.
