Nowadays, the percentage of elderly is rising, this is associated with some advantages like increase the professional experiences and maturity of the society. However, some disadvantages may also appear like the high pressure on the health system, and the limited ability to work and produce.
Living in an elderly population has several advantages. Firstly, older people have gained a valuable work experience through their lifetime, this experience is beneficial for young adults who may have the knowledge but not enough experience, engaging elderly in the professional environment has a significant impact on the whole working process. Secondly, having a higher elderly proportion increases society maturity. In a recent American study, problems like drug abuse, crimes, violence and homelessness are more common in young adults rather than elderly people. So living with elderly people is consider safe and you would be highly unlikely to face the social problems associated with younger age groups.
However, if the proportion of elderly is really high some drawbacks may come to the table. For example, this may increase the demand on healthcare services, as ageing populations are associated with many chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, and renal disease. This will cost a lot of money in terms of treatment and healthcare services. Moreover, the productivity is very low in this age range, due to the physical limitations, senior citizens may not be able to work even though they have a precious experience.
In conclusion, the increase of older adults number have some positive and negative impacts on the overall population. Although older citizens may have limited ability to work and produce due to health conditions, they still have a precious experience and high level of maturity.
