Road accidents presents a pressing issue in today’s automobile advanced world. There is a growing belief that the only way to increase road safety is to inflict harder punishments upon offenders. This essay will present arguments as to why there are other more efficient solutions to solve this problem.
Foremost among the measures that could be taken to improve road safety is to make driver licenses harder to get. A driver license should require the person not only to learn how to handle an automatic car but also a manual one. Thereby, the learner will gain a a lot more experience. Also, holding mandatory intensive courses and seminars on various topics may decrease the number of accidents. For example, in Germany, it is required for a person to attend both a practical and theoretical course on firs-aid. This, in case of an accident, will allow people to manage the situation better.
Another major solution that could be implemented is to make adjustments on driving age limits. Raising the age limit of acquiring a license from 18 to 22 and lowering the expiry from 75 to 70 will significantly lower the number of accidents. For instance, a recent report made by the World Health Organization in the United States shows that 60 percent of accidents are caused by people aged under 22, another 25 percent is caused by people over the age of 65. Therefore, while this may lead to some backlash, I believe drivers should be limited to these age limits.
In conclusion, while sever punishments on road offenders could raise safety to a certain level, I am inclined to believe that there are other more effective methods that can be taken such as offering more strict and essential driving lessons and training and adjusting the age limit of the drivers.
