Band 7+: The population of some cities is growing rapidly. What are the effects on people living in these cities? What solutions can you propose to maintain a good quality of life in urban areas?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The population of some cities has been growing rapidly over the years, leading to significant challenges for urban residents. These include limited living space, increased competition for jobs, and high demand for resources, which can negatively impact the quality of life. In this essay, I will discuss the effects of rapid population growth and propose viable solutions to maintain a good standard of living in these areas.

Admittedly, there are many negative influences on the city residents. One major effect of

rapid population growth is the limited living space. As more people migrate to cities, housing becomes increasingly scarce and expensive. For example, in the metropolitan areas, individuals must spend a significant portion of their income on rent or mortgages, causing financial stress. Another critical issue is the increased competition for jobs. With a growing population, people have to work more diligently to secure well-paying jobs, often leading to stress and burnout. Additionally, the increased demand for resources such as healthcare, education, and public transport can overwhelm urban infrastructure, reducing the overall quality of life for residents.

To address these challenges, several solutions can be implemented. First, the government should encourage the development of the suburban areas by improving infrastructure and connectivity. This would allow people to live outside the city while still accessing urban job opportunities, thereby reducing housing pressure in city centers. For example, cities like Tokyo have successfully expanded their suburban rail networks to accommodate population growth. Second, promoting shared living arrangements, such co-housing or affordable condominiums, can help alleviate the stress of limited living space. These initiatives not only make housing more accessible, but also foster a sense of communities among residents. Last but not least, authorities can provide financial assistance to unemployed individuals and invest in skill development programs. Offering free or subsidized training courses can help people enhance their employability and reduce the intensity of job competition.

In conclusion, while rapid population growth in cities poses significant challenges such as job competition, limited living space, and increased demand for resources, these issues can be mitigated (alleviated) through effective government policies and individual efforts.
