Band 7+: The population of some cities is growing rapidly. What are the effects on people living in these cities? What solutions can you propose to maintain a good quality of life in urban areas?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is true that there is a significantly increasing rate of population in urban areas. This phenomenon has brought about several adverse impacts on the lives of people, necessitating the adoption of practical solutions.

The population surge in urban areas can cause many issues, especially in terms of housing and public services. Regarding the former, when the number of people settling in urban cities is surging, it is likely that the demand for housing tends to jump correspondingly. Therefore, various housing problems can escalate for urban citizens, namely affordable accommodation and a dearth of housing. A case in point is Singapore whose geographical area is limited, yet this country often witnesses an ever-increasing number of immigrants annually, causing a plethora of obstacles for governments and residents in this country such as the rise in housing costs. Another significant repercussion of the urban population surge on society is that it can put a burden on essential public facilities, which can be blatantly observed in the domain of healthcare and education. If there is an excessive use of these services, these systems may face a number of challenges concerning inadequate funding, and a lack of amenities and human resources, potentially leading to a decline in the quality of these services.

Given these limitations, many feasible solutions can be offered to alleviate this situation. Chief among these is the relocation of citizens in these areas to alleviate the population burden on large cities. To implement this plan effectively, governing bodies should use their power and allocate an enormous amount of money to construct more satellite towns for accommodations and enhance the connectivity between these towns with the cities, which facilitates better and time-saving commuting. These established towns can address the shortage of housing to some extent, improving the lives of citizens remarkably. Another approach worth mentioning is that the authorities can utilize their financial aid for advances in public services. For instance, they can invest more in the healthcare field and education by sponsoring health centers with more state-of-the-art equipment and high-quality drugs or democratizing access to educational resources, making it easier for people to use these services.

In conclusion, the unprecedented population growth has resulted in several challenges relating to housing and public sectors. Despite these detrimental factors, policymakers and authorized bodies can introduce new housing schemes as well as invest more in improving public services to make urban areas worth living.
