The following table demonstrates the propotions of children attending four secondary school types namely specialist schools, grammar schools, voluntary-controlled schools and community schools during the year 2000 and 2009. The unit is caliberated in percentage.
As shown in the table, it is noticed that specialist schools have declined over the years with 12% attending them in 2000, followed by 11% in 2005 which further dropped to 10% in 2009. In contrast, it is evident that the figure of children attending community schools had doubled in those nine years with 12% of pupils in 2000 which increased to 32% in 2008 which again rose to 58% in 2009 which made communtiy schools the most preferred choice of students in 2009.
Further examing the table, it is revealed that voluntary-controlled schools has the largest percentage of children attending their schools with more than 50% of them attending it in 2000 yet the figures took a nosedive with 38% of children attending it in 2005 which further dipped to 20% in 2009. Whereas, grammar schools also saw a decrease in admissions with 19% in 2005. Additionally, the number became half with 24% in 2000 and 12% in 2009 respectively.
