Filming movies is a way of exploring important themes for talented film-makers around the world. However, with the widespread influence of western media, some say that countries should preserve their cultural identities through movies. Although I agree that the film industry is a one way to promote one’s culture, it is undeniable that taking inspiration from US is beneficial for local film companies.
First and foremost, there is a lot of unreached potential in historical and cultural stories to explore. Even though the general public may favor international blockbusters, a well-shot national film can be highly relatable and thought-provoking for locals. “1000 warriors”, for instance, was a historical drama shot in Kazakhstan which educated millions of locals on past hurdles of a, now, independent country. Unless governments pour investments into such local films, indie directors will lack funds to touch on topics crucial for local communities.
On the other hand, the western influence on film industry is a driving force for some directors. Due to high popularity of American media, taking inspirations from Hollywood grants an access to a world-wide fame and recognition. South Korean dramas, for example, are catering their TV series to larger audiences by being broadcasted on Netflix. Similarly, countries may benefit from the US film industry, if it is taken as a starting point for their own filming endeavors.
In conclusion, there is a certain need in supporting local film companies to cover intricate cultural aspects of lesser known nations. Nevertheless, US movies can be taken as positive examples of what audiences prefer to watch on a regular basis.
