In the modern era, social media, such as Facebook and Twitter is playing an important role in human’s life, but it is believed that the usage of social media is supplanting face-to-face communication. While there are certain merits associated with such tendency, I am of the opinion that its drawbacks vastly overwhelm its benefits.
On the one hand, some people would argue that the invention of social media platforms has brought a plethora of upsides to their lives. First and foremost, through electronic devices, digital online connection makes it more straightforward to contact other people, even over long distances. For instance, it takes longer and more expensive to set a place and time to meet others than just communicate via online platforms, such as Messenger or TikTok. Moreover, these platforms create grounds for everyone to be entertained. For example, people can share things about their lives, advertise goods, or upload anything they want and users can surf these statuses in their free time for relaxation.
On the other hand, I firmly hold the view that these aforementioned advantages are outweighed by disadvantages. First, it can be clearly seen that because of using social media, people tend to lose their communication skills. This phenomenon can be called social media addiction, which affects young users most. For example, when having a date with someone, people have a tendency to glance at their digital devices instead of talking with each other. By the way, abusing social media may make people lazier and more sluggish. They would just surf the Internet, immersing themselves in these platforms. As a consequence, they would suffer from serious diseases, such as memory loss, obesity and eye diseases.
All things considered, social media provides platforms for entertainment and fast communication; nevertheless, its serious drawbacks are unprecedented. Therefore, I totally hold the opinion that these disadvantages overshadow the advantages.
