It is the fact that people these days make conversation on social media platforms rather than face-to-face. Although this tendency has a few benefits, I contend that its drawbacks are significant.
Admittedly, there are some undeniable advantages related to people switching to social media for their social interactions One of these is that such online platforms eliminate geographical barriers, allowing individuals in long-distance relationships to maintain and strengthen their bonds. This is in stark contrast to the past when contacts were mainly through mail, which was more time-consuming and lacked vivid images and sounds that social media provides Another advantage is that social media platforms like Facebook or Messenger enable instant contacts among users, they can receive and send messages or calls immediately without delay. This is particularly convenient for modern society, where people don’t have much spare time to arrange real-life gatherings.
However, I am of the opinion that the disadvantages of over-reliance on social media for daily communication far outweigh the aforementioned benefits. One notable problem is the potential decrease in communication skill. When using text and icons for conversation, users have time to think of words to express their thoughts and emotions before sending while in real-life communication, which require instant reflex, they cannot respond on time and become refused to express their thoughts, which could possibly place them at a disadvantage in many professional and social contexts. Another serious issue is that relationships will become superficial if interaction merely takes place though online platforms in the long term. In fact, interactions among people have evolved over millions of years through both verbal and non-verbal interactions in face-to-face communication, which cannot be ensured when screens are the only medium for dialogue, where users cannot observe other’s real facial expression
