In a world driven by the desire to look younger and more attractive, many people are spending a fortune on beauty products and cosmetic procedures. This trend stems from two main reasons, mainly because the effects of social media and popular influencers who advertise such goods. Personally, despite some possible benefits, I believe this is a negative trend as a whole.
The finger of blame should be pointed at social media at first. With many influencers endorsing anti-aging products and cosmetics on social media, most people tend to purchase these items out of their admiration for these influencers. In addition, nowadays, in most offices, when employers hire new workers, they take not only their experience and degrees, but also their looks and appearance into consideration. For instance, in jobs like receptionist or secretary, an attractive appearance plays a huge role in attracting new customers or getting hired faster than others.
In terms of beneficial sides of this view, following a skincare routine would be the most prevalent example. When people desire to seem younger, they start to establish a consistent routine and adhere to strict rules such as staying hydrated or not eating junk foods, which have potential threats to skin health. Furthermore, psychological benefits are the epitome of advantages of allocating money for younger appearance. Tailored skincare and anti-aging treatments directly boost one’s self-esteem and increase their dopamine and serotonin levels.
However, in my opinion, spending a huge amount of money on beauty products is an unfavorable trend in general. Basically, cosmetic surgeries are not reliable, and in some cases they may end with unwanted results or even fatal conditions, mostly because of wrong mixture of medications used for anesthesia. Moreover, some anti-aging products might have possible rewards, but they have detrimental effects on the skin, including a damage to the skin’s natural barrier or an inevitable dependance on complex skincare routines, which a person may not be able follow when they get older.
In conclusion, the reason why people spend a lot of money on youth preservation is their appreciation for influencers who advertise such products or to get professional advantages. Allocating money for longevity may benefit people in terms of better skin and self-confidence, while using beauty products or going under risky procedures are plain in comparison to prioritizing overall health.
