Band 8+: Today, food travels thousands of miles from farms before it reaches consumers in urban areas. Why is this the case? Is this a positive or negative trend.

In today’s world, consumerism is proliferating. Owing to this, international trade is rapidly expanding, which leads to food being transported across long distances before it reaches consumers. I believe this is a positive development as it strengthens a nation’s economy and consumers can get a wider variety of food options.

The primary reason behind this trend is that it helps to stimulate economic growth. To explicate, when a nation starts exporting food items, the country’s economy grows, resulting in an increase in farmers’ income. Additionally, it creates employment opportunities in the transportation sector, as food products need to be transported across long distances. For instance, many farmers in developing countries export fruits and vegetables to international markets, which enables them to earn higher profits. As a result, this not only improves farmers’ living standards but also contributes to the overall economic development of the country.

From a positive perspective, this trend provides consumers with a wider variety of food options. This is because food items that were previously not available in the local market are now accessible to the consumers. To cite an example, kiwifruit, which mainly grows in New Zealand, is now available in supermarkets around the world due to international trade. Moreover, buyers get a better deal in their purchases as imported food items often increase market competition, which can reduce prices and improve the quality of food. Consequently, shoppers can enjoy a wider variety of food products at reasonable prices.

In conclusion, although food travels due to expansion of international trade, it is a positive trend because it boosts economic growth and provides consumers with a wide variety of food options at a cheaper prices.
