Advertising plays a crucial role in the sales of popular consumer goods in contemporary society. It is widely debated that advertising results in the demand of popular consumer goods rather than their actual needs. I completely agree with this notion and believe that advertisement makes artificial needs.
Firstly, advertising techniques have become increasingly sophisticated over the years, making it difficult for consumers to differentiate between their actual needs and the wants created by advertisers. Companies use social media platforms to target specific groups of consumers and manipulate their emotions by creating a sense of need for products they may not have even thought about before. For example, Samsung advertises its new smartphone product every year which leads to many people changing their previous versions of their phones, although the new smartphones do not have any special features compared to their former versions.
Furthermore, sometimes advertisements offer special deals, such as special discount or special guarantee to attract customers to buy it, even though they do not need it. They come up with a limited deals within a specific time, and attract customer to purchase it within that time. Customers will usually go for it even though they do not need it at this moment, as they think is an extremely great deals and next time when they need it, they cannot find it at the discounted price anymore. Besides that, famous people can also inspire customers to purchase unnecessary goods. For example, Lisa, who is a superstar, bought an art toys around two months ago, and after that, these art toys sold out everywhere and this trend is estimated to increase in the future.
In conclusion, advertisements manipulate consumers into purchasing products they may not necessarily need. While some may genuinely need the products, others may simply be influenced by the social pressure to own the latest and most popular brand.
