The issue of whether success in learning a foreign language predominantly relies on the learner’s language aptitude or their diligent efforts is a subject of ongoing debate. While some assert that innate ability is paramount, others, myself included, are of the view that the learner’s hard work is the key determinant.

On one hand, proponents of the natural ability argument posit that one’s inherent capacity plays a significant role in language acquisition. They argue that possessing natural aptitude provides an advantage, facilitating the learning process. This argument contends that the ability to memorize a plethora of new vocabulary and intricate grammatical rules is eased by innate linguistic prowess. However, it is essential to recognize that dependency solely on innate aptitude often leads to inadequate practice, hindering the progress of language learners. For instance, in Vietnam, despite some individuals having a superior innate ability to grasp vocabulary and grammar, lack of consistent practice hampers their language proficiency.

On the contrary, I contend that success in foreign language learning is predominantly contingent on relentless effort. Regardless of one’s inherent language aptitude, diligence is the crucial attribute that enhances proficiency. Specifically, language learning necessitates regular practice, making perseverance indispensable. Evidently, learners who maintain a disciplined study routine, consistently practice, and expand their linguistic knowledge will excel. An exemplary illustration is Ho Chi Minh, the former president of Vietnam, who achieved fluency in a foreign language through self-study, daily practice, and immersion, emphasizing the pivotal role of dedication and hard work in language mastery.

In conclusion, while both natural ability and hard work are deemed important, I am inclined to opine that diligent efforts play a more decisive role in achieving proficiency in a foreign language. I firmly advocate for learners to prioritize enhancing their abilities through persistent hard work in order to succeed in foreign language learning.
