In modern terms, tourism is one of the fastest-growing industries and contributes a great deal to economies around the world. Although People often forget that tourists can harm local nature and ways of life. I strongly agree with this statement that the negative impacts of tourism on local cultures and the environment are critically overlooked.
To begin with, the first and foremost reason behind this is that environmental degradation caused by mass of tourism sector is rarely given serious consideration until it is too late. This is because huge numbers of tourists require accommodation, so cleared natural areas, trees, and build road, along with hotels, resorts, and recreational facilities. In other words, natural landscapes are sacrificed to create modern facilities for holidaymakers. As a result, there is a significant impact on ecosystems, and wild animals lose their homes. Consequently, beautiful natural places are ruined forever. For example, in Goa, many beachfront hotels dump plastic trash and dirty water directly onto the beaches.
Furthermore, another important reason behind this is that a lot of tourism ruins local traditions and habits. This is because local people change their customs just to get money from foreigners. In other words, sacred dances and rituals become cheap shows for entertainment. As a result, the unique local culture disappears completely. Consequently, young people forget their real history and true culture. For example, in Bali, traditional temples now sell tickets for cheap dance shows, and local cafes are replaced by international fast-food chains.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that the negative impacts of tourism on local cultures and the environment are critically overlooked.
