There are a plethora of causes of traffic congestion, but two primary factors were the excessive volume of transport and poor quality of infrastructure. First of all, the growth of traffic volume resulting from dense urban population density can cause congestion during rush hours. Moreover, due to the convenience of private vehicles, both residents and the government are not aware of the importance of public transport. This could bring about a situation where public transport would face restrictions and underestimate its inherent values. Another contributing factor to traffic jams was the quality of infrastructure. Since irregular road maintenance, there are various narrow thoroughfare and messy intersections. This, combined with the lack of traffic control measures such as traffic lights, road branches and others will result in traffic accidents and consequently traffic jams.
Several measures can be implemented to solve this problem. First, if local authorities implemented additional road branches in the transport system, it would alleviate traffic congestion. Furthermore, counter-urbanization policies encouraging people to resettle in rural areas will help reduce the number of traffic participants in the city. In addition, the government should prioritize the expansion of public transport. This could be achieved by introducing concession fares for public transport and reducing car tax. Lastly, the government should continuously enhance infrastructure quality by conducting regular road maintenance and building modern facilities such as highways, overpasses,… to ease the pressure on the roads.
In conclusion, traffic congestion is an urban issue that primarily comes from the excessive traffic volume and poor quality of infrastructure. To solve this problem, there are a number of measures the government can take such as counter-urbanization, implementing road branches, and improve the quality of infrastructure.
