While some people, including me, support the idea of taxing unhealthy food, others see a problem in doing so because of food being nothing more than a bunch of nutrients.
On one hand, food is food no matter what. It would make no sense to punish some kinds of it for being harmful for people who make a decision to buy it themselves. We are all grown-ups and can understand that we should regulate some things in our diet in order to protect our health. It’s everybody’s right to ruin it if they want to as well until it doesn’t damage others. Therefore, “fat tax” goes against people’s free will.
On the other hand, we all know in what way those foods are that desirable: chemicals added in it to attract more consumers and get more money out of it. It’s pure capitalism with no benefit for society and, in my opinion, humanity should try to make the world a better place, so taxing alcohol, nicotine and other harmful goods, including unhealthy food, is a good idea because it would encourage people to get something else instead. I believe it would do a significant job in reducing the number of people eating nothing else but fast food.
To sum up, both opinions have their pros and cons, but if I had a vote I would support introducing of unhealthy food tax.
