Band 6+: Water pollution has become an increasing problem over the past few decades. What causes water pollution? How can we prevent this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Contamination of water has become a growing concern than ever before. Primary reasons for this problem are mismanagement of waste and rapid industrialisation.

Education and government regulations can play a vital role in solving this issue.

We all are aware that poor water quality is the one of the main reason for poor health. Although there may be a long list of reasons causing pollusion, it boils down to two things which significantly casue the water quality to deteriorate. On one hand, it is improper management of waste. When a country or a city develops, more and more people move to that place in search of job opportunities. This causes a strain on the existing waste management systems in place. As a consequence, the waste collected are improperly dumped into the sea of river bodies which inturn makes the water less portable. For example, In a city like Mumbai, rapidly growing population has forced authorities to throw the human excretion in rivers, which has made the river water unfit for human consumption. Another reason is, as the economy grows fast, industrial output goes up which also comes with side effects. As more and more factories are built, it leaves with a significant amount of industrial and chemical waste which are disposed into water-bodies which results in pollution.

It is the government’s responsibility to ensure that its masses have access to pure drinking water. By educating the masses and the responsible governing body responsible for planning waste disposal, a State can play a vital role in curbing pollution levels. Additionally, stricter regulations for industrial waste management and harsher punishments for wrongdoings can go a long way in keeping our rivers and lakes clean. For instance, in Singapore, all the waste are collected in one location far from the city and is burned to generate electricity.

In conclusion, a country’s growing population and develepment can become the cause for water contamination. However, by proper government policies and stringent regulations, we can still have a world with clean water. As someone rightly said, whrere there is a will, there is a way.
