A wedding is a combination of ceremonies that in today’s globalised and social media influenced world is expected to be grand and luxurious. From past few years, individuals in mostly all nations spend humongous amount of money on their wedding in contrast to decades earlier. This essay will discuss the reason behind the same and its negative impacts.
There are myriad of reasons for people spending wealth of money on their wedding ceremony. Firstly, wedding occurs once in lifetime, therefore, one wants to make it memorable and unforgettable for themselves. Secondly, due to tremendous competitions on social media about people posting their day to day endeavours and showcasing their wealth, it becomes natural for others to jump into overspending and going beyond their budget to brag and become popular amongst their friends, colleagues and relatives. Moreover, due to societal pressure, there is enormous load over the family members of bride and groom to invite tons of people, incorporate varied dishes, and book a scenic and large space.
Spending skyrocketing amount of money on weddings may have some upsides, however, its negatives outweigh the positives and cannot be overlooked. People spent more than their capacity and are forced be in debt. This may cause detrimental repercussions in long run for a family. A recent study from The Times Newspaper reports that more 90% of today’s generation spends more than 75% of their wealth and savings on their wedding in the year 2023 as compared to 1990 where only 20% of their savings were spent in weddings.
To conclude, it is very essential to make marriages memorable and worthwhile, however, not at the cost of being in debt and suffering for lifetime. One should not go beyond their capacity and spend handsome amount on their wedding for the sake of social media, community or society. In my view, saving money for future rather than spending it for just momentary happiness is worthwhile and fruitful.
