Whether people achieve their ambition is mainly a matter of luck has been long debated. While favourable circumstances can sometimes give individuals an initial advantage. I strongly disagree with the view that success is mostly determined by chance, as lasting achievement is far more closely linked to persistence, sound judgement, and the environment in which a person grows up.
Granted, luck can influence certain outcomes in one’s life. Some individuals are born into financially secure families, meet famous people at a crucial moment, or happen to start a correct business at the right time. For instance, a small business, Zoom, was launched in 2018, which was basically a video-call platform; this business became internationally renowned and instantly profitable due to the lockdown of Covid-19 in 2019, not because of superiority compared to other enterprises. Likewise, if a student wants to enter a prestigious university, this requires not only academic excellence but also fiscal resources, meaning that children born into wealthy households have a higher chance of fulfilling their ambitions.
Far more decisive is sustained effort combined with self-discipline. Those who devote years to enhancing their skills and expertise are significantly more likely to accomplish their goals than those rely on serendipity. Cristiano Ronaldo is a shining example, as his career has been shaped not only by talent but also relentless training, strict habits and an unwavering desire to improve. Similarity, many inventors like Nikola Tesla from ordinary backgrounds have made world-changing inventions through consistent trial and error and careful preparation. Such outcomes are difficult to happen purely by luck alone.
Another powerful influence is the environmental in which people are raised and operate on a day-to-day basis. People who grow up in supportive households, attend high-quality schools, and are surrounded by ambitious parents and peers find it easier to convert effort into results. A student, for example, whose parents encourage reading, provide study materials and guidance, and can afford extra tuition is naturally in a stronger position to achieve their goals than someone of equal ability but limited support and resources. In the same way, young aspiring entrepreneurs living in major business hubs like Hong Kong and Dubai certainly benefit from better networks, easier access to finance, and greater exposure to innovation.
In conclusion, although luck can occasionally shape opportunities, it is unconvincing to claim that achievement is mostly a matter of fortune. In reality, success is often the by-product of perseverance, disciplined effort, and an environment that allows potential to be fully realized.
