Discussion

Band 9: With global travel becoming more accessible and affordable, some people advocate for promoting tourism in remote and culturally sensitive regions. Conversely, others argue that such tourism can have detrimental effects on local communities and the environment. Discuss both sides and provide your perspective.

It is often argued that international travel has become so accessible that it threatens local cultures and traditions. However, others believe that global tourism encourages cross-cultural understanding and supports economic development, especially in poorer regions. In my opinion, although tourism can damage cultural identity if it is not properly controlled, its benefits are greater when it is managed responsibly.

On the one hand, the growth of international travel can contribute to the loss of unique local traditions. This is mainly because many tourist destinations adapt their culture to meet foreign visitors’ expectations. For example, traditional ceremonies, local food, and handicrafts may be commercialised and presented mainly as entertainment rather than as meaningful cultural practices. As a result, local communities may gradually lose the original value of their customs. In addition, the influence of global brands, foreign lifestyles, and international entertainment can make younger generations less interested in preserving their own heritage.

On the other hand, tourism can also bring significant advantages. One major benefit is that it allows people from different countries to learn about each other’s ways of life. By interacting with local communities, tourists can develop greater respect for different cultures, religions, and traditions. Furthermore, tourism can create jobs and generate income for developing regions. For instance, local people can earn money through hotels, restaurants, transport services, tour guiding, and small businesses. This can improve living standards and reduce dependence on limited traditional sources of income.

In my view, international tourism should not be seen as a threat in itself. The real problem is poor management. Governments should protect cultural sites, support local artists, and ensure that tourism businesses respect local traditions. If these steps are taken, tourism can preserve culture rather than destroy it.

In conclusion, while easy international travel may put pressure on local cultures, it also promotes understanding and economic growth. I believe that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages, provided that tourism is developed in a sustainable and culturally respectful way.
