Band 6+: With the rapid advancement of communication technology: smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, some people believe that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The question of whether technological devices such as smartphones, tablets, and other digital tools have a detrimental impact on modern society has become a subject of widespread debate. While some people argue that the disadvantages of these technologies outweigh their advantages, I firmly agree with this view.

To begin with, one of the most compelling arguments concerns the impact of technology on interpersonal communication. The widespread availability of smartphones and other digital devices has significantly reduced the frequency of face-to-face interaction. As a result, individuals increasingly rely on instant messaging and social media platforms, gradually losing the ability to engage in meaningful, in-person conversations. Consequently, this overreliance on virtual communication can erode empathy and weaken emotional bonds, ultimately resulting in less cohesive social relationships. In fact, when communication becomes predominantly screen-based, subtle non-verbal cues such as tone, facial expression, and body language are often lost, which further undermines the depth of human interaction.

That said, a more nuanced perspective suggests that digital technologies help to reduce physical distance between people. A key advantage of these tools is that they significantly facilitate communication and, in turn, help bridge the gap in long-distance relationships. Moreover, this trend enhances real-time interaction and emotional continuity among individuals separated by geographical distance, thereby allowing relationships to be maintained despite physical separation.
