In this day and age, advanced technological innovations such as AI and robots have displaced many jobs. This means that AI and robots are taking over many jobs in the economy. With this in mind, it is clear that unemployment is becoming an issue that needs to be addressed. In my opinion, the government should ensure employment for all citizens by setting rules for companies to follow, as mass unemployment will lead to social unrests.
It is important to acknowledge that when a country experiences unemployment for a long duration, the citizens will rise up to demonstrate or protest. For example, China is currently experiencing very high unemployment, and there have been a number of protests and demonstrations throughout the country, not to mention the burning of several buildings. If the government does not solve the unemployment problem, it could lose its power over the country.
One way to solve the unemployment problem is for the government to set rules for companies to follow, especially for companies that are adopting AI, robots, and other automations that would result in mass layoffs. For example, one rule is for the government to allow a factory to automate only 50% of their processes, not 100%. In this way, some people will still have jobs. Another example, if the unemployment rate of an area is more than a certain percent, such as more than 10%, then a rule to prohibit factory automation can be put in place for that area. Hence, government has a lot of power to keep companies from automating 100% of their processes.
In conclusion, while AI and robots can bring convenience to our daily lives, these automations can bring destruction to our labor force. We cannot let machines ruin our livelihoods.
