Some people think that removing non-academic courses will relieve some of the immense academic burden students bear nowadays. In my opinion, noneducational classes help students discover who they are and what type of activities outside of academia do they enjoy. Additionally, it serves as a step for learning how to survive living alone as a college student.
Firstly, extracurricular classes such as music, art, cookery and physical education serves as the stepping stone for discovering ones self. In more than one instance I have seen people realize their love for art through art classes ushering them to further develop their skills and expand their horizons by trying out various art mediums and tools. Moreover, most students I know have taken a liking in music which helped them figure out their passion for different musical instruments such as the drums; my closest friend now plays the drums for a living and it all started in our small hometown school’s tiny music room.
Secondly, unique non-academic classes that can be found in specific schools for instance cookery and mechanics help young individuals come a long way when they live independently in college. Cookery sets up students to fix up few simple dishes with even fewer ingredients since most schools can not afford anything too fancy which is in the best interest for young people when they move on to higher education and there is limited appliances and ingredients to use. Furthermore, most students are clueless when it comes to cars so teaching them about the different parts of the car, how each one functions and how to quickly fix up things is always wise. For instance, if I had not learned how to fix my car, I would have been stuck in the storm for hours.
In conclusion, non-academic subjects are an essential part of any young person’s live and should continue being incorporated in the syllabus to shape their personalities and help them on their daily lives.
