Band 8+: Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

In recent years, the emergence of freelancing platforms has sparked a rise in self-employment. People are now opting to work for themselves instead of working for a fixed income in an organization. In this essay, I will discuss the key drivers of this trend and outline the potential drawbacks of being self-employed.

There are a myriad of reasons behind the transition to self-employment, the most notable being that it provides flexibility and freedom. Freelancers work on their own terms, they are able to schedule their work duties on their own accord without answering to a manager or boss, allowing them to choose when and where they wish to work. For example, Upwork is a platform that allows self-employed data analysts to select and search for project-based work, providing them with the opportunity to gain valuable experience. Subsequently, this doubles their income and professional connections, which would have been otherwise difficult in a traditional organisational framework.

While the benefits of self-employment are evident, there are a few major drawbacks to this trend. Firstly, individuals are often under immense pressure because they have greater responsibilities, such as regulating the streams of income and, in some cases, the distribution of salaries to workers. This, in turn, negatively affects their mental and physical well-being, leading to anxiety and depression. Moreover, it is unstable, and the remuneration does not follow a fixed pattern. For instance, the revenue that businesses accumulate often depends on the number of customers who patronize them. This means that if people are not buying the service freelancers provide, they may receive a substantially low income. Ultimately, making it a risky endeavor, which comprises numerous disadvantages.

In conclusion, self-employment promotes autonomy and flexibility by eliminating the constraints of traditional work environments. However, despite the appeal of this trend, it is a highly demanding and risky avenue of making money, which may be harmful to the psychological well-being of individuals who are their own boss. Evidently, meticulous planning is required compared to working for a company.
