The surge in popularity of people communicating via the Internet and text messaging has placed face to face communication on the brink of disappearance. While online communication is preferred over physical interaction due to its convenience, I believe that face to face communication still plays an indispensable role in human’s daily life.
On the one hand, the use of digital communication is beneficial in terms of convenience, which makes it increasingly popular over in-person communication. People can easily collaborate in real time or save travel time with the use of online communication. For instance, many companies currently prefer conducting meetings on video conferencing platforms rather than physical interaction as it saves employees not only time but also money spent on transportation fees. Therefore, due to the flexibility and convenience of online communication, it is more preferred by people than the conventional one in the digital epoch.
However, I disagree with the view that real life communication will be totally replaced by online communication as it allows for genuine connection. When communicating in person, people can use non-verbal cues such as body language or facial expression to not only convey their implications but also interpret emotions more effectively. Face to face communication will, thus, play an indispensable role in some specific situations to build connection.
In recapitulation, although the convenience offered by digital communication is beneficial to people’s daily life, I contend that it cannot fully supersede face-to-face communication as it fosters trust and understanding. Nevertheless, in today’s digital era, it is increasingly essential for individuals to cultivate an awareness of the pros and cons of both communication approaches so they can optimize the use of each.
