Positive And Negative

Band 8+: More and more people nowadays are choosing plastic surgery. Why do people have operations to change the way they look? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Plastic surgery has gained increasing popularity in the modern era. This could be attributed to multiple factors, which will be analysed in the essay below, together with the reasons why I find it a negative development.

Admittedly, people who opt for plastic surgery are motivated by two primary reasons. Firstly, it is preferential treatment in employment that serves as an incentive to enhance one’s modest appearance. On the grounds that an appealing physical charm has long been an implicit standard of numerous fields of specialisation, especially the realm of entertainment or multimedia communications, the more beautiful an individual is, the higher the chances of being hired. This could be exemplified by those who work as idols. Had it not been for a good look, they might not have been approved to debut. Coupled with this is the ability to correct visual defects, most of which are induced by severe accidents. This correction renders people more attractive, paving the way for self-confidence and, in turn, self-love. As a result, having a visually decent appearance helps them escape body shaming, thereby boosting quality of life in the best scenario.

From my perspective, such a development brings two negatives. To begin with, the surgery usually involves a high degree of potential risks. If it fails, not only can victims’ faces be deformed, but they will also suffer from several long-term complications, let alone death. A prime example of this is a beauty salon named Cát Tường in Vietnam. It was reported years ago that the centre was held accountable for a few deaths during operations. In addition to this, customers of plastic surgery might face toxic and negative reactions. This is mainly because society has a tendency to value natural beauty as well as criticise those with man-made exteriors. Hence, there is a high probability that such individuals are prone to stress or even depression for fear of receiving insulting comments as soon as their past images are brought up and posted on social media platforms.

In conclusion, the increasing prevalence of cosmetic surgery is caused by multiple factors. From my point of view, this development is more harmful than beneficial due to the associated health risks and societal judgement.
