Initially in 2004, Chinese student applications were dominant at around 27,000, surpassing other nationalities. Nevertheless, this figure gradually declined to approximately 18,000 by 2006 and 2007, reaching its lowest point of 15,000 in 2008. In contrast, the number of Japanese applicants started at 16,000 and steadily increased, peaking at roughly 24,000 by the end of the period.
Similarly, the number of American and Russian students stood at 15,000 and 3,000 respectively in 2004, with both figures experiencing slight rises to 28,000 and 10,000 by 2008, respectively. Despite a minor dip in 2005, the trend for both countries was one of constant growth in student applications.
