The provided charts illustrate the number of students in elementary schools across four states in Australia for the year 2010. Overall, it is clear that the majority of classes in these elementary schools had between 21 to 25 students. Additionally, classes with more than 30 students were quite rare in the four states surveyed.
Focusing on smaller class sizes, the Australian Capital Territory had the highest proportion of classes with fewer than 20 students, as well as those with 21 to 25 students, at 51% and 38%, respectively. Western Australia followed with the second-highest ratio of classes containing 21 to 25 students at 42%, which was 5% higher than that of New South Wales and 9% higher than that of South Australia. Notably, South Australia was the only region to experience classes with fewer than 20 students, which constituted the most common size at 36%. In contrast, New South Wales and Western Australia each had 26% of their classes in this category.
Regarding larger class sizes, New South Wales had the highest proportion of classes with 26 to 30 students at 33%. This was more than 5% higher than South Australia and 6% higher compared to Western Australia. The Australian Capital Territory recorded the lowest percentage of classes within the 26 to 30 student range, at only 10%, and just 1% of classes had more than 30 students. The proportion of classes with over 30 students in New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia ranged from 4% to 5%.
