Band 8+: In some countries people spend long hours at work. Why does this happen? Is it positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The phenomenon of people working long hours is becoming increasingly common in certain countries. This essay argues that the primary reason for this trend is the pursuit of financial gain, which is negative due to its detrimental impact on individuals’ physical and mental well-being.

One major factor driving individuals to work long hours is the opportunity to complete a greater number of tasks, thereby increasing their chances of earning a higher income. Successful accomplishment of tasks can lead to promotions to higher positions such as manager, supervisor, or even boss, which in turn translates to more financial rewards. As the cost of living continues to rise, individuals face challenges in covering expenses like housing, transportation, and healthcare. Therefore, a higher income is essential in enabling individuals to meet these financial obligations.

Despite the financial benefits of working overtime, there are significant health consequences that can negatively affect individuals’ quality of life. Spending less time on relaxation and physical activities due to long work hours can result in various health issues, including depression and obesity. For instance, studies have indicated that a high percentage of young workers in Japan who work long hours experience stress and exhaustion.

In conclusion, while working extra hours can lead to a higher income, it is crucial to acknowledge the adverse effects on individuals’ personal lives and overall well-being. The financial gains from working long hours may come at the expense of physical and mental health, which can ultimately impact an individual’s quality of life negatively.
