The illustration compares the proportions of things, which a particular piece of ocean was contaminated with between 1997 and 2007.
Overall, while domestic sewage and offshore oil increased their share, others, including marine, industrial and farm waste, litter, and pollutants from air, significantly decreased over the period.
In detail, in 1997, pollutants from air took up more than a quarter of the chart, dominating it, at 30%, followed by marine, at 22%. In comparison, domestic sewage and industrial waste accounted for 18% and 17%, respectively, whereas offshore oil demonstrated only 5%. However, litter and farm waste each constituted 4%, becoming the smallest categories in the chart.
In contrast, in 2007, pollutants from air experienced a slight decline to 29%, while domestic sewage witnessed a massive jump to 29% as well. Furthermore, offshore oil also dramatically increased its proportion to 14%. However, marine saw a significant diminution to 17%, whereas industrial waste substantially fell to 9%. Farm waste slightly diminished to 2%, while litter completely disappeared.
