The image depicts a library’s ground floor in 2001 and its alterations in 2009.
Overall, the most significant changes were the relocation of history and fiction sections, along with the establishment of clearly zoned shelving and digital facilities.
By 2001, eight small tables were arranged in two neat rows in the centre of the plan. Along the left wall, history material areas occupied the upper half, with self help shelves below, whilst a spacious dedicated newspaper and periodical section was positioned opposite in the far right. Furthermore, visitors entered the library through a central doorway on the bottom of the sketch, with a librarian’s desk immediately to the left. Adjoining the entrance, the staircases were located at the bottom left corner.
As for 2009, the existing tables were replaced by four new longer ones at the centre of the space. The fiction section was eliminated to create space for dedicated children’s books, with a dedicated area for minors below. Along the right wall, the news and periodical section was converted to a films and DVDs zone, whereas two computers were installed to the bottom of it. Notably, a tall, vertical series of shelves defined the left margin, with additional subjects including cookery, economics, and law collections. Remarkable transformations notwithstanding, the entrance, the librarian’s desk and the stairs remained intact.
