Nowadays, people live longer compared to four years ago, because of the new discoveries in modern medicine. Some live more than ninety years in certain parts of the world, while others live more than a hundred years depending on their country’s level of medical technology. However, there is an ongoing debate on whether the advantages of this situation outweigh the drawbacks. In this essay, I will explore the benefits and disadvantages of living longer than expected due to advances in medicine, and I will draw a conclusion.
Let us begin by examining the advantages. One significant advantage of this condition is that some individuals will have luck of seeing their grandchildren. Some families specifically have the gene of short life, and they are deprived of the privilege of seeing their children’s children. The existence of these advances in the medical field that increases life expectancy can be particularly beneficial to this group of individuals.
Another positive aspect of these new technologies is that it can create new types of jobs, and so reducing the unemployed population in a country. It is not just the medical team that is needed to study procedures that could increase the time spent on earth by humans, it takes a team of diversified professionals from fields like engineering, biotechnology, and medicine.
On the other hand, the side effects of these discoveries could be very dangerous to the environment, because some requires the use of massive machine that releases carbon dioxide in the atmosphere destroying the ozone layer. If the ozone layer is destroyed, humans may be exposed to more dangerous diseases such as cancer, which kills faster than any other disease. Another issue of allowing people to live longer is that it may cause overcrowding on the earth, which is also be dangerous for the ecosystem.
To sum up, new advances in medicine that have the potentials of improving life expectancy are advantageous in that it can create new types of collaborations between the medical field and other fields and may also permit some families to see their grandchildren. Nonetheless, this phenomenon may lead to overpopulation on the earth and also to the destruction of the ozone layer. In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
