Band 7+: Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of working from home.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Urbanisation started in the early 18th century and since then, a large number of people have been attracted to city life. Living in cities has some merits and demerits, which this essay tried to investigate.

On the one hand, there are a few downsides which cannot be ignored. A major disadvantage is pollution. Whether it is noise or air pollution, it can cause disorders from stress to respiratory diseases. In other words, those cars on the streets and factories working nearby can slowly take minutes and hours out of our lives. Another disadvantage of city life for city dwellers is traffic. Bumper-to-bumper situations waste hours of commuters’ time on the roads. This time can be utilised in many other useful ways. As a result, in a city, both your time and your health are at risk.

On the other hand, the urban lifestyle can offer unique privileges to the inhabitants of cities. Professionally, there are better chances for those who reside in large cities. From better schools and universities which can hone your skills to large companies and corporations which can give you better job prospects, cities are full of opportunities. Moreover, the entertainments in cities are far more appealing and diverse. If you are interested in arts, there are art galleries, theatres, and museums in metropolises. If you prefer sports, sports events and gyms can satiate your desire. Thus, the life-work balance is more interesting in large cities.

In conclusion, while living in a city has drawbacks such as pollution and traffic, it offers advantages, including better entertainment and job opportunities. Personally, I believe that the merits outweigh the demerits in many ways. However, for older people who are more fragile, moving to the countryside seems a prudent decision.
