Band 7+: People eat more processed food than they did in the past. Why is this? What are the effects of this?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

More processed food items are consumed by people in their daily lives today than in the past. The main reason for this shift is that people are busier than ever, leaving them with less time for home meal preparation. This trend can lead to serious health problems at an early age.

People’s daily lives have become increasingly fast-paced compared to previous generations. This is largely due to longer work hours that leave little time for cooking. After a tiring workday, many opt for convenient processed foods such as frozen pizzas and pre-packaged meals. These items can typically be prepared in just 10 to 15 minutes, allowing individuals to save significant amounts of time. Moreover, some processed foods are more affordable than fresh meals, making them a more attractive option for those on a tight budget.

As a result, this reliance on processed foods can have detrimental effects on health. Many processed items are not prepared fresh and may have been stored for long periods, potentially developing harmful bacteria. These foods can contribute to serious health issues such as obesity, cancer, and heart disease. Furthermore, in order to extend shelf life, manufacturers often add preservatives, including excessive amounts of sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, all of which can lead to conditions like diabetes and other significant health issues. Consequently, individuals who regularly consume such processed meals may find themselves facing health problems at a young age.

In conclusion, people with tight schedules and budgets often resort to processed meals. While this choice saves them considerable time and money for other daily priorities, consistently consuming such foods can result in serious health challenges later in life.
