The Table provides data on the percentage of students enrolled in four categories of secondary school over the period from 2000 to 2009.
Overall, community schools witnessed a consistent upward trend in students numbers, while specialist schools, Grammar schools and voluntary-controlled schools saw a gradual decline through the period.
In 2000, specialist schools attracted approximately 12% of students before diminish slightly to become 11% in 2005, the same in 2009, the rate fall 1% to be 10%. Grammar schools begin the period by 24% of students but the rate decrease rapidly to 19%, this continued to decline to 12% in 2009.
Voluntary-controlled schools was the most popular among other secondary school of pupils 52%. However this figure drop sharply to 38% in 2005 and further declined to just 20% by 2009. In contrast, community schools showed a dramatic increase in popularity. Starting at 12% in 2000 to nearly one-third 32% in 2005, before surging to 58% by 2009.
