The rapid increase in Science and technology has fostered the development of e-books. Some believe that it’s a good sign as it paves the way for development of better and fast readers; however, others argue that it’s not wise to enhance the use these digital based study materials. In my opinion, these digital sites are not a favourable means of progression.
E-books reduce the authenticity of the information. Paper based books maintain the originality of the author’s work; if it’s to be transferred electronically, some pieces of information are likely to be left out which reduces the quality of the literal work. For instance, Born A crime by Trevor Noah missed some information when changed to electronic mode. The absence of important details may lead to ambiguity in interpreting and understanding the work.
Nevertheless, e-books can be helpful in terms of conserving the environment. Cutting down of trees for the manufacture of non digital books causes deforestation. Taking Africa as an example, about 10,000 trees are cut per month for industrial manufacture of paper. This mostly results to increase of carbon dioxide concentration since forests [carbon sinkers] are cut down without any replacement. Transforming to the tech-world, will be a stepping stone in alleviating this problem.
As much as electronic books are important, we can’t deny for a fact that there will be a confusion in extracting knowledge. Having a direct contact with a book entices the spirit of wanting to know more. It also reduces procrastination as an individual has a book in hand unlike electronic books.
To conclude, the accessibilty of paper based books is higher than electronic ones. They are not selective and doesn’t require one to purchase device and inquire more costs of book purchase online. For this reason, it is wiser not to stick with e-books.
