Most of the higher education will construct the pupils to continue their study to college. It is frequently argued that taking one year pause before proceeding to university will be beneficial to students. This essay will discuss and elaborate on the benefits and the drawbacks of allocating one gap year before students are enrolled in the campus.
On one hand, the positive impact of taking a gap year is that students would have more time to figure out what they want to achieve and their sole purposes in life. Most of the time, final year learners in high school are burdened with exit exams, to which they need to spend most of their time to study and complete their assignments. This would leave no room for students to contemplate on what they want to become. With gap year, students will have additional time get to know themselves, for example by exploring several majors, or fulfilling their time with volunteering and social activity. After the students are aware of what they truly want in the future, it will be easier for them to choose which university and major to take, as they have planned the paths to achieve their goals.
Nevertheless, with these benefits, taking a gap year will also possess several negative impacts. It is evident that with this scheme, longer time is needed to complete one degree. For example, the normal bachelor degree is obtained by 4 years of study. With an additional gap year, the time needed after the students graduated from high school to finish the bachelor degree is 5 years. During this gap, if the students decided to work, either part-time or full-time, there is risk of students developing the sense of independency, since they are able to make money on their own. This may result in the lack of motivation to pursuing their study to the university.
To summarize, taking one year break after high school before registering to university bring several positive and negative impacts. The break can give students opportunity to know themselves better, which leads to accurate path to be taken to achieve their goals. However, on the other hand, with taking the break, it will increase the study time
