I absolutely agree that working week has to be reduced and those who work need to be given a bigger weekend, because it will contribute to better productivity, leading to corporations gaining more value. Moreover, it will result in better mental and physical well being of the workers, leading to better familial harmony. Furthermore, there are ethical grounds for reducing working hours because of recent innovation in productive tools.
Firstly, what companies want from employees is better productivity, and when they are well rested, logically they will perform better. A recent study was done with two large groups of people who work manual labor with a reduced four-day work week and traditional five or six-day work week. Interestingly, the group of laborers who had an extra day of weekend has been shown to produce more work in less time, lucidly showing the benefit of a well rested group of workers.
Secondly, businesses have a social responsibility to maintain the health of their employees. Especially in modern times, with better, more productive tools, employees are better than ever at what they do. Holistically speaking, social harmony is necessary for every society, and iif a person cannot spend enough time with their families, it can lead to internal damage.
To conclude, we can lucidly see that more working hours do not automatically translate to better performance. However, it can lead to mental health problems and damage the collectivity of society. Nowadays, companies must consider not only profit but also the social implications of their actions.
