From the beginning of civilization, law and punishment has always been an essential factor in maintaining peace and order within the society. Moreover, individuals tend to take different stances on the punishment systems. While some believe that incarceration is the only solution, others feel that there are superior alternates. As far as I am concerned both options have perks of their own; however, my personal belief aligns with the latter belief.
On the one hand, it is inevitably true that placing any lawbreaker in jail would ensure public safety. In other words, the citizens would be able to enjoy their lives to the fullest without having to worry about dangerous situations such as burglary, thefts, and frauds. Moreover, it is in the general belief that imprisoning wrongdoers can set a deterrence against most people who intend to turn to crime. If all offenders were to serve their prison sentences, there would eventually be reduction in crime rates in the future.
On the other hand, alternative means of punishment such as community service should be considered when dealing with minor offences. Firstly, prisons can be a negative environment for lesser offenders as they can imitate or be impacted by the actions of habitual criminals. Therefore, it would be more beneficial to involve criminals in community work programs where they can contribute positive assistance to the underprivileged. Additionally, community activities, which can also bring mental rehabilitation, can help minor offenders become ethical individuals through social interactions. This further prevents previous wrongdoers from turning back to crime.
In conclusion, while incarcerating all lawbreakers could bring more security to the society, I believe participating petty offenders in community service as a payback would be more effective due to its potential to foster reintegration of violators and reduce the number of habitual offences in future. With the implementation of an effective and suitable punishment system, the crime figures will fall, providing citizens their well-deserved sense of security and peace.
