There are various rules that should be obeyed in order to have a safe and comfortable society. Ignoring one of these rules and doing crimes could result in adverse effects on the community and the quality of our lives. Therefore, a punishment is considered for the person breaking down these rules. Some persons believe that the specific punishment should be set without considering the type of crime. However, the other group of persons think differently. They insist on making a differentiation among the penalties depending on the result of each crime. I am going to discuss the differences between these two opinions and mention why I agree with the second group. It will not be justified if there is only one type of penalty for all kinds of crimes. For example, the adverse effects of killing one person are really worse than rubbing bread. In addition, it is not possible to set a medium type of punishment for all crimes which is limited to paying defined amounts of money. This can lead to motivating criminals to act whatever they like without being worried. On the other hand, bounding all persons in prisons is not logical due to the atmosphere and condition of this place may adversely affect their character instead of healing their souls and minds. Based on the second group’s idea, the punishment should be defined based on the intensity of the crime. For instance, paying money could be acceptable for the person who stoles bread while more serious reactions should be done against those who hurt others and sacrifice them. In some cases, some social activities could be considered instead of transferring the crime to a prison. As an example, planting 100 trees could be a positive punishment for a person who destroys the environment. In conclusion, I think that taking into account the intensity of the crime is the best way to prevent breaking the rules. This forces people to respect others’ rights and provides the possibility of living in a more healthy society.
