The bar chart compares the percentage of renewable energy used as fuel in the transport sector in six European Union countries, as well as the EU average, in 2009 and 2010.
Overall, Slovakia recorded the highest proportions in both years, whereas Greece consistently had the lowest figures. Most countries experienced an increase in the share of renewable fuel use over the period, with Austria being the only exception.
In 2009, Slovakia led all countries at around 9%, followed by Austria at just over 6%. France and Poland reported similar levels, at approximately 6% and 5% respectively, while Spain and Greece had much lower shares, at about 3% and 1%. The EU average stood at roughly 4%.
By 2010, Slovakia’s figure declined slightly to about 8.5% but remained the highest. Austria experienced a noticeable fall to around 5%. In contrast, Poland rose to match France at 6%, and Spain saw a significant increase to nearly 5%. Greece also doubled its proportion to 2%, although it continued to have the lowest percentage among all countries. Meanwhile, the European Union average grew moderately from 4% to 5%.
