Band 7+: Some people decide to start their own business instead of working for a company or organisation. Do the advantages for people working for their own business outweigh the disadvantages?

It is believed that the decision to run one’s own business is preferable to working for a company or organisation. Nevertheless, I contend that the drawbacks of starting a business are more significant, despite its potential benefits, as I will outline in this essay.

Looking first at the drawbacks, it is essential to note that one of the primary problems of running a business is the financial risk involved. Starting a business commonly requires a substantial investment, and not all entrepreneurs are immediately successful, meeting with expectations. In fact, many small businesses fail within their first year due to a lack of experience or disorganized planning. Additionally, there are some responsibilities which have to be faced related to being a business owner. This person must manage this independently, overseeing all aspects of operations, including finances, employees, and customer service. Ultimately, many business owners may get pressure from all their responsibilities, ranging from the aforementioned high risk to falling down in a messy aspect of regular operation and long working hours. This strain could result in the business ceasing operations.

Moving to the benefits, it is often said that individuals can enjoy the freedom and independence of owning a business. They are positioned to derive fulfillment from their decisions, such as setting their schedule and determining the direction of their business. This approach can typically lead to a higher level of job satisfaction. Additionally, it is frequently said that a business owner may acquire new skills which are uncommon qualifications if we can see on the companies’ workers. For instance, they are able to improve public and personal communication, management, and leadership skills from their role-related commitments.

In conclusion, while owning a business seems advantageous to some extent, I would argue that its drawbacks are more significant. These include preparing considerable investment, facing many responsibilities, and getting pressure from the financial risk.
