The charts illustrate the number of tourists visiting Australia from the UK, the US and Japan from 1995 to 2005, as well as types of travel chosen in the same period.
Overall, the number of visitors from all countries increased over the decade, but Japan only showed opposite trend with a considerable decline. In terms of travel types, backpacking remined the more popular option throughout, although it experienced a significant decrease.
In 1995, approximately 800.000 people from the UK travelled to Australia, and this figure almost doubled to around 1.5 million by 2005. A similar upward trend was seen among American tourists, rising from roughly 500.000 in 1995 to about 1.5 million ten years later. Japan showed a different pattern: although it started as the largest source of tourists at 1.5 million in 1995, the number fell to around 1 million until 2005.
Regarding travel types, backpacking was clearly dominant in all three years. Their numbers increased from about 1.6 million in 1995, peaking at approximately 2.5 million in 2000, before declining to around 1 million by 2005. Resort stays, on the other hand, experienced moderate growth, rising from roughly 300.000 travelers in 1995 to just over 1 million where it reached the point of intersection with backpacking.
