There is no doubt these days that humans are living longer compared to the past. While some people believe that an elderly population causes problems for governments, others argue that there are advantages to having old people in the community. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the topic and explain why I support the latter view.
On the one hand, one of the drawbacks of having elderly people is that they can be seen as a heavy burden on the community. In other words, young people may struggle when dealing with them because of the huge age gap. For example, when you have an argument with your grandfather, you will find his mindset is extremely different from yours. Furthermore, if the proportion of youth is higher than old people, productivity in life could increase.
On the other hand, one of the significant advantages of an elderly population is that we can treat them as role models and learn from them due to the many years and experiences they went through. Teenagers specifically might benefit from their advice. For instance, in every village, there is an old man who can solve any issue; everyone comes to him first and then applies his words. Consequently, if there are no old people in the area, there will be a lack of wisdom and awareness.
In conclusion, although elderly people can be a burden on society, they also have great effects on us. In my point of view, their benefits outweigh the drawbacks, and I prefer to live with old people rather than without them
