We are no stranger to the fact that some professions are dominated by either men or women. However, I believe that the lack of gender equality in the workplace is caused by society’s perception of each gender’s role and responsibility. Everyone has the freedom to choose their career without any gender constraints
First of all, there are male or female predominant fields, but no occupation is exclusively meant for one gender only. During the war, while men served in the military, women actively participated in manufacturing and construction, which are considered as physically required and favor men nowadays. According to the public’s perception, women are naturally nurturing and caregiving that is the reason why professions such as nurse, early education are often pursued by women. However, it is not true, women in the past were excluded to masculine jobs due to the patriarchy, which is a social system where men have the power and leadership. The predominance of male or female in profession may not due to weaknesses or strengths but the social construct.
Secondly, it is always beneficial to have various perspectives and equality in the workplace should be encouraged. Female police officers will be more sensitive to detect domestic violence cases, or male nurses would know better how to take care male patients. The employer should recruit the best qualified candidate capable of fulfilling the job rather than considering their gender. It opens more opportunities for people to work in the field they are passionate about.
For example, the number of male nurses is increasing due to job security, high earning and professional career development
In conclusion, no profession or occupation is exclusive for a specific gender. People can choose any career that they want as long as they have the capacity for the job, which can also bring a great development for the employers
