Nowadays, food security has become a major concern for many countries around the world. Some people believe that countries should prioritize food production for residents and minimize imported from abroad. I think that this perspective has both positive and negative aspects. This issue will be discussed in this essay.
To begin with the main reason makes countries should produce on their own is food security assurance. Clearly, overdependence on imported food make countries can be vulnerable to external factors such as the war, epidemic or trade disruptions in trade. When international supply chain disruptions, food supply can be serious shortages or sharp price. For example, in COVID-19, many countries face difficulties in accessing food because of limitations on international transportation. More importantly, domestic food production help farmers can get a job and promote the development of the agricultural sector. For instance, agricultural support programs can help residents stabilize livelihoods and limit the trend of urban migration.
In the other hand, limiting food imports excessively also has many drawbacks.
Obviously, not all countries have climatic conditions ,suitable land or water resources to produce food. They may face with low productivity or high production costs. Moreover, imported food products help consumers can access a wide variety of food sources at reasonable prices. In VietNam, people can access food products from other countries to gain more knowledge about the food cultures of other countries.
In conclusion, I believe that importing foreign food products has both advantages and disadvantages. A sustainable food policy should strike a proper balance between domestic self-reliance and international integration in order to best meet the long-term needs of the population.
