Band 9: As languages such as English, Spanish and Mandarin become more widely spoken, there is a fear that many minority languages may die out. Some countries have taken steps to protect minority languages. What is your view of this practice?

In the modern era of globalization, due to the dominance of major tongues such as English, Spanish, and Mandarin, there is a growing fear that many minority languages might become extinct. While certain nations have implemented policies aimed at preserving these less prevalent languages, I firmly agree that preventing these languages from dying out is essential for maintaining cultural identity and ancestral heritage.

Preserving minority languages is indeed pivotal in terms of cultural identity and heritage. Every dialect carries its own unique narrative and customs, even if it is used by a small community. In our fast-paced modern life, languages such as English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic are spreading globally, even among non-native speakers. As a result, this trend results in the disappearance of some languages that are spoken by a few people. The extinction of a language represents not only a loss of linguistic data but also the disappearance of a unique cultural perspective and ancestral wisdom. For instance, Wales, known for its rugged coastline and mountainous national parks, is trying to preserve the distinctive Welsh language, which is spoken by only one-third of the population. Welsh authorities are carrying out extensive and systematic efforts. For example, Children are taught Welsh at their school alongside English, and the media provides content in pure Welsh language. Their primary aim is to increase the number of Welsh speakers to 1 million by 2050.

Regarding practical considerations, maintaining minority languages is challenging due to globalization; however, it is still achievable through the implementation of the right approaches and practices. Most people prefer global languages due to better job opportunities. As a consequence, lesser-known languages are disappearing because fewer people are interested in learning them. Nevertheless, through a combination of adequate funding, teaching resources, and supportive government policies, it is possible to preserve these languages. Language-learning applications, such as Gymglish, Babbel, and Duolingo, can play a vital role by providing effective learning methods, which ultimately help these languages gain popularity worldwide. Furthermore, global initiatives by organizations such as UNESCO can play a crucial role in safeguarding linguistic diversity. These organizations provide support by documenting endangered languages and encouraging governments to implement mother-tongue education in local schools.

To sum up, I believe that protecting endangered languages is essential, as language is an inseparable part of a nation’s culture, history, and identity. We must safeguard these tongues for future generations through coordinated international and governmental actions.
