Band 7+: As languages such as English, Spanish and Mandarin become more widely spoken, there is a fear that many minority languages may die out. Some countries have taken steps to protect minority languages. What is your view of this practice?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, languages such as English, Spanish and Mandarin are becoming more widespread throughout the world. Not surprisingly, English and Mandarin are considered to be lingua franca, while Spanish is spoken mostly in Central and South America, Caribbean islands, Equatorial Guinea in Africa. The concern of minority languages disappearing has arisen among people lately. Consequently, some countries have taken steps to protect them. I believe adopted measures are relevant since language is an essential element of every cultural heritage.

According to The Declaration of Human Rights, ethnic groups have the right to speak their mother tongue without being consumed by a dominant culture. It ensures that minority communities can preserve their identity, traditions, and values. When people are free to use their native language, they feel a stronger sense of belonging, which ultimately contributes to a more harmonious society. For example, in India, dozens of regional languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, and Marathi are officially recognized, allowing people from different linguistic backgrounds equally participate in national life.

On the other hand, a shared language could reduce cross-cultural misunderstandings and unify people within a nation, whereas multiple languages may create some communication barriers. It becomes easier to share ideas, build trust, and work together toward common goals when people speak the same language. When citizens speak the same language, it becomes easier to share ideas, build trust, and work together toward common goals. In France, French is the sole official language used in government, education, and public life. This policy has helped maintain a strong national identity and clear communication across the country.

In conclusion, while using one common language can strengthen national unity and simplify communication, protecting minority languages remains crucial for preserving cultural identity and ensuring social harmony. Both approaches have value, but maintaining linguistic diversity allows societies to stay connected to their roots while still promoting mutual understanding within a nation.
